DAVE COHEN
Comedian, Perrier nominee in a previous century, founder member of the Comedy Store Players - in the 1980s Dave Cohen was an averagely successful stand-up comedian. Hey, let's not be over-modest here - Britain's Most Averagely Successful stand-up comedian. In recent years he has become more known as a comedy writer, having written for Have I Got News For You and Not Going Out, and as a comic songwriter, co-creating the Radio 4 hit 15 Minute Musical and writing loads of songs for the hit BBC Childrens' Show Horrible Histories. (see link Doh Re Me) 'Horrible Histories' was named Best Comedy by Childrens' BAFTAS 2010 and 2011, and Best Sketch Show two years running at the British Comedy Awards.
Like an occasionally victorious boxer who has had all the 'quit now' cells pummelled out of his brain, Award-Winning Comedy Writer Dave has decided to give performing another go. Since his return to the stage in 2004 he has been hailed as ‘a great comic talent’ by the Daily Mail (despite all the nasty things he’s said about them) and the Evening Standard called his songs ‘hilarious’. In his 20s he told jokes and sang songs about being fat, single and Jewish. Now in his 50s, he tells jokes and sings songs about being bald, deaf and Jewish.
Last year, he (okay, I'll admit it, this is me writing my own biog) performed my first new one-man show in 16 years, a stand-up poem called 'My Life As A Footnote'. His new show, 'Songs In A Flat', will be premiering at the Etc Theatre in Camden from 6-25 March 2012.
Did I mention Award-Winning?
In the 80s and 90s I co-wrote a bunch of songs for 'Spitting Image' with Pete Sinclair. This is my favourite, now up on my YouTube Channel Will post more soon.
